Derek Leach OBE was re-elected chairman of The Dover Society, with 450 members, at the well attended annual meeting on April 10 2006. Others elected were: Jeremy Cope (vice chairman), Bill Naylor (secretary) and Captain Mike Weston (treasurer). The committee was re-elected with the addition of Alan Sencicle.
In the second half of the meeting society member Martyn Webster told how his 20 year research into the Steber family, once in business in Dover, had revealed an intriguing story. The family originated from German, came to Dover as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, traded as clock makers in Cannon Street and, following bankruptcy, emigrated to the USA. Mr Webster explained his interest in the Steber family was sparked by Martin's family ownership of a Steber-made long case clock.
