Dover Society meeting
Councillor Paul Watkins, leader of Dover District Council, used PowerPoint to explain what has been achieved by discussions through the Dover Pride organisation. He outlined several projects that Dover is likely to see in the coming months.
Mr Ken Dupuy of St Margaret's Bay, a chartered engineer, gave details of his proposal to construct an immersed tube tunnel under the waters of Dover harbour, from the bottom of Jubilee Way to the A20 at the far end of Snargate Street, designed to rid Townwall Street of noise, congestion and pollution. He submitted that at present Townwall Street cut off the waterfront from the town resulting in Dover's decline. He admitted he had not costed the proposed tunnel's construction but suggested it be paid for by private enterprise with revenue from a toll on vehicles using it.
He was supported by Mr John Spool of a national construction company who explained how a similar immersed tube tunnel was built across the Medway at a cost of around £80 million.
